Blue Fin 54

Sam designs in groups in his ongoing quest for unbelievable flexibility in boat design. The Blue Fin 54 is an adaption of the Blue Fin 48, which you should check out for the thought process behind her design. In the 54 variant, you keep the stunning efficiency and add more space and comfort, while keeping the fuel economy and designed-in ability to smooth out choppy waters. Sam has designed a single and twin screw version. The twin screw version offers a bit more performance and the ability to use the twin configuration for maneuverability in tight situations. The single screw version offers amazing efficiency for going the distance with minimal fuel burn. Our friend Temur Rukhaya has not only completed a sterling build of this design, he has given us real world data on the outcome of fuel efficiency. Read about Temur’s build here. A very pleasant Sunday afternoon phone conversation with ‘Jeff’ a prospective boat buyer very soon outlined a potential problem with the design that he was interested in. You see Jeff is 7ft. tall and while I design my boats for tall people the 7ft. height is really off the radar for most design projects unless specifically needed or requested by the design customer. Simple design modifications can be done to an existing design to a point but sometimes you really need to think out of the box to accommodate the customer and their very specific requirements and needs.

After hanging up the phone I simply couldn’t put this one away in my mind and so spent the next couple of hours modifying another similar design to fit Jeff’s unique height requirements. In this drawing the cockpit has a 7ft occupant included for scale, all interior headroom’s are In the 7’-4” range including the forward cabin area.

Just a bit of glimpse into the life of an inveterate boat sketcher and designer’s life, this one wrapped around a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon.

An email request for building plans on the Scout 20 (which we currently are not offering on our website) was the initial inspiration on what could happen if we modified the current Surf Scoter 22 design (which we do have building plan and kits for) and added 6” of freeboard to the hull, changed the swoop of the sheer in the cockpit edges and lowered the Pilothouse the same 6”. The results look interesting to me with lovely and huge volume inside and a great cockpit a lot of space and utility for a 22ft. boat. We can thank Clive for the inspiration to this one.

Scout 20

Scout20Beauty1The Scout 20 was built over the stretch of a long year and was launched early fall of 2009 for John and Helen Carlson of Washington State. John had brought in the well thought out design to us from his own hand and we converted his basic hull shape to the Stitch and Glue boat building method. Once we agreed upon a price, we started in immediately by cutting out the bulkheads and other structural members and set them up on a simple building mold in the shop. A couple of days later, the plywood was scarfed for the hull panels and we had the bulkheads skinned over and were starting the cold molded layers (1/4, 6mm) on the bottom of the boat.

Many months later, both John and his wife were present for a quiet and solemn launch ceremony. Just moments after touching the water however, the engine was throttled up and she roared off over the bay. All of us were pleased with the speed and her presence on the water and it’s really quite hard to imagine a larger little boat design that might exist. She has an interior that has two bunks, the proverbial porta-potti, a galley complete with pressure water, wood stove for interior heat, hanging locker, and lots of sitting headspace. She is really quite the little cruiser and offers her owners the pleasure of getting somewhere in a short amount of time and once the hook is firmly set on the bottom, a calm and comfortable evening lounging in either the cockpit or in the cabin.

Her speed with a Yamaha 90hp outboard topped out at 27mph and cruising at a comfortable 18-20mph. For our South Puget Sound waters, she is ideal for poking in an out of all the small coves and sheltered anchorages.

With Johns permission, we are working on the full homebuilder plans for her. I hope that you will enjoy the pictures of her under construction and cruising in the Sound and think that you will agree with me that this little boat has a real presence on the water. — Sam Devlin

Sea Bug 20

SeaBugFrontThe Sea Bug is an adaptation of the Chinook Launch and the Sea Chaser. The latter was commissioned by a Bermudian whose priority was fishing. The Sea Bug continues with this idea in a more compact form. The spacious cockpit allows unobstructed movement for those times when a big fish can’t decide which side of the boat he wants to be on. A central engine box provides a convenient place to sit and wait for the drag to take off. I’ve specified a straight-shaft diesel inboard to drive this displacement hull, though a gasoline engine could be used as well. A removable tiller on an outboard rudder enables a singlehander to leave the wheel helm; especially useful when trolling. The oversized windscreen gives excellent protection from spray and folds down flat for calmer days. A small cabin forward has enough room for a modest berth and a portable head (You’re welcome, ladies). This boat is well-suited for a bimini, t-top, or even a lightweight hard top. The handy little Sea Bug will have an easy motion through the water and I suspect it will be almost as irresistible to fish as to fishermen. – Sam Devlin

Winter Wren II

WinterWrenIIBeauty2This boat is designed to be the ultimate in a pocket yacht with a tidy 176 sq. ft. sail plan. The Bermuda rigs mast steps on the cabin top and is easy to raise and lower. Winter Wren II has been designed from the ground up for trailering. Her hull has 685 lbs. of internal ballast and she sails stiff and stable. A very efficient dagger-board configuration is used for the lateral plane and Winter Wren II draws only 1’1″ of water when retracted and 3’6″ when extended. The dagger board trunk is in the cabin forming the edge of the galley. With the board raised, Winter Wren II is beachable and sits low on her trailer. With the dagger board down, Winter Wren II is a fast and responsive sailer. Her helm is very nearly neutral and the lightest of touch is required for instant response. She will easily sail through 90 degree tacks to windward, and off the wind, the Bermuda rig provides excellent performance.

WinterWrenIISlipA large and comfortable cockpit that is separated from the cabin by a bridge-deck will accommodate four adults in comfort. Both cockpit seats are 66″ long so that on nice nights you can sleep out under the stars.

We have designed a highly efficient, trailerable boat from the base of our popular Winter Wren and offer this new version as an option to the sailor who needs to keep his cruiser at home when not out voyaging.

Winter Wren

WinterWrenSideElegance in a small package, the Winter Wren is perfect for the cruising couple. She is trailerable behind small cars, yet spacious enough for extended cruising. For daysailing Winter Wren has comfortable seating and accommodations for four sailors. The cabin is well-organized for comfort and efficiency. The double berth is forward, seat to port and the galley to starboard. There is room for a perky wood stove and cedar bucket for a sink or head.

Two cockpit configurations are available. For sheltered waters, an open, water-tight cockpit with comfortable seating on each side is offered. For off-shore work the cockpit is flush decked with a 24″ x 36″ hatch set next to the companionway. In fair weather the hatch is open and serves as a foot well. In rough weather, batten the hatch and you have a self-bailing cockpit that still has 14″ high seat back rests.

The Winter Wren carries her 195 sq. ft. gaff rig gracefully and has proven herself the equal of boats in her size range. She sails through 90 degree tacks to windward, and off the wind, the gaff rig provides unexcelled performance. The helm is well-balanced and invites the sailor to enjoy a variety of wind and sea conditions.

Wompus Cat

WompusCatSailSideSailing a boat like the Wompus Cat is simplicity itself. She has just a single mainsheet and tiller to tend, yet with her wide beam she is capable of sailing fast and flat. Her generous cockpit offers plenty of room to bring friends without getting in each other’s way. In the cabin, there is plenty of room for comfortable and livable space, which is quite a trick in boat this size. The Wompus Cat is trailerable, and her draft allows her into shallower waters in your explorations. It’s hard to find an easier path to a full featured sailboat.

Candlefish 18

The Candlefish 18 is largest boat in the Candlefish lineup. Her hallmark is simplicity and utility, with a dash of performance from the incorporation of the Pelicano 18 hull. This a hull that works very well as the foundation of a number of Devlin designs. In this application it combines the flexibility of an open boat with the seaworthiness of a relatively tall hull. Sam has worked in large and flexible seating over the top of a huge amount of dry storage with even more storage in the bow. There is plenty of room for reserve buoyancy that, even in an unsinkable design, adds the peace of mind that comes from knowing the boat will float, level and stable, even when full of water. If the smaller Candlefish boats are waterborne pickup trucks, the Candlefish 18 is the moving van.

Lit’l Coot Full Keel

The Lit’l Coot Full Keel is a is seaworthy and capable motorsailer with enough space on board for the organized sailor and enough potential to keep serious travelers satisfied. She is the sister to the original Lit’l Coot with the same hull and the same tendency for balanced performance and maximal use of space, but the change to a fixed centerline keel allows her to stand up to weather that the original could not handle. This change also frees up space in the cabin, which makes her more comfortable for longer cruises. Twin rudders surround the outboard motor on the centerline to allow efficient motor cruising on an economical 9.9 hp outboard.
